Just Because It’s Expensive, Doesn’t Mean It’s the Best

Guest column by Andrew Bronstein, MD.

At the Bronstein Hand Center, we see about 50 to 70 patients a day. My patients’ experience in the office is important to me, and I expect any software we use to help me manage my business and help create a positive patient experience.

In the last several years, automation in the medical practice has become much more common. From billing to patient records, there are lots of benefits to electronic solutions and plenty of reasons to move forward, but there are also risks.

Not long ago, I spent several months evaluating a variety of solutions to automate my orthopedic practice. I finally settled on a $50,000 system that I felt would provide my practice with exactly what it needed. I consider myself to be pretty computer-literate, and I thought I had made the right decision.

Two days after the system was installed, the company went bankrupt. It became the gift that kept on giving. I had a loan payment for software I couldn’t use and PCs that were locked because of proprietary passwords I couldn’t access. I had very expensive paperweights sitting all around my office!

It turns out that this is not uncommon, and as a result, I was skeptical about trying again. Still, I knew that to meet many of changes in healthcare, I needed to have systems in place to help my practice maximize reimbursement and meet regulatory requirements while continuing to provide a good patient experience. So I started again at square one.

The big difference was my healthy dose of skepticism. I looked for solutions that offered the tools I needed, but I also looked for stability, flexibility, and a reasonable price tag. I also wanted to be sure the system would keep me up-to-date and help improve my revenue. Again, I invested a lot of time doing research and looking into the companies I was interested in.

In the end I found exactly what I was looking for—the combination of Kareo medical office software and Practice Fusion EHR. These web-based solutions are intuitive and easy-to-use. My staff and I downloaded the software and set it up in no time. There are no long-term contracts and I can cancel at any time.

Kareo has taken the pressure off of me and my staff to stay up-to-date with Medicare changes and other government mandates. It updates every time we logon and helps clean up my coding and process my claims quickly. And it has helped my bottom line and streamlined my patient flow.

I have no affiliation with the company other than being a customer, but I appreciate Kareo’s pricing structure, no pressure sales, and great customer support. It has shown me that the company is committed to staying on the cutting edge. They know that to keep their customers they have to be leaders both in the products they offer and their customer service. It’s the same philosophy that I have about running my own business. They get that.
