eClinicalWorks Partners With UpToDate

New Technology Allows Physicians to Access Up-to-date Clinical Information Directly from Patients’ Electronic Medical Records

UpToDate, an evidence-based electronic clinical information resource, and eClinicalWorks™, a provider of unified EMR/PM systems, have announced a partnership to provide physicians with access to UpToDate directly through the eClinicalWorks electronic medical record (EMR) and practice management (PM) solution. This integration allows physicians who have access to UpToDate and eClinicalWorks EMR/PM Version 7.6 or higher to receive answers to clinical questions quickly and easily, without having to close out of the patient record.

“Primary care physicians are under constant time pressure. As a result, it can be a challenge to find the time to answer clinical questions,” said Paul Pettinato, MD, a Brockton, Mass.-area physician who now accesses UpToDate though eClinicalWorks. “Integrating UpToDate into the EMR gets me the answers to my questions instantly—right from the patient record. That means that I no longer have a ‘to do’ list of questions to look up after the patient leaves the office. I’m confident that my patients get the best care possible, based on the best evidence available.”

UpToDate, the pre-eminent clinical resource for timely and practical clinical information, is used by more than 250,000 clinicians in more than 130 countries. In the United States, more than 87% of major teaching hospitals and almost 1,300 community hospitals subscribe to UpToDate. The widespread use of UpToDate has had a profound impact on patient care, and positively affects thousands of decisions made every day by clinicians around the world.

UpToDate and eClinicalWorks began their collaboration as part of the Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC). The MAeHC project is charged with implementing electronic health records (EHRs) in community-based settings in three Massachusetts communities: Brockton, Newburyport and North Adams. eClinicalWorks is the largest provider of EMRs to the project.

“Integrating with eClinicalWorks is a major step forward in bringing medical information to the point of care to ensure that all patients receive quality, evidence-based care,” said Denise Basow, MD, vice president and executive editor of UpToDate. “Providing clinicians with access to UpToDate from within the patient’s electronic medical record means instant access to information that we know changes doctors’ decisions.”

UpToDate is a comprehensive electronic information resource that provides practical and reliable answers to clinical questions at the point of care. Written and systemically peer reviewed by a faculty of more than 3,600 physician authors, editors, and peer reviewers, UpToDate provides evidence-based diagnosis and treatment recommendations. UpToDate’s library of practical clinical information includes more than 7,000 topics in 13 specialties, with more than 22,000 graphics, 250,000 Medline abstracts and a drug database. In addition, individual subscribers can accrue CME/CE credit while using UpToDate.

“eClinicalWorks works continuously to provide the most comprehensive solution on the market and partners with companies that share the same vision,” said Girish Kumar Navani, president of eClinicalWorks. “UpToDate will provide our customers with an important tool that they can use when treating their patients. By integrating this with our EMR/PM system, providers can seamlessly access this information at the point of care.”
