Ensure Your Patient Data is Secure in Transit

Physician practices are challenged with meeting the strict data security requirements of HIPAA’s Security Rule, which states that all electronic protected health information (ePHI) must be secured at all times.

More important than securing data just to meet requirements, a physician’s office needs to keep its patient records safe to prevent exposure of sensitive health information, which can expose healthcare professionals to potential liabilities.

One way to do so is via the NCP Secure Enterprise Client. It helps keep data secure when employees are connecting to the office remotely. The IPsec VPN software guarantees that all access points to the network are safe without users needing to know or worry about settings, device compatibility, connection negotiation or policy requirements.

The NCP Secure Enterprise Client secures all of the information on physicians’ devices and while in transit to their corporate networks. That means that it fully complies with HIPAA’s data-in-motion security mandate.

Technology Employed

NCP’s one-click enterprise VPN client synchronizes and securely transmits patient data from physicians’ devices to their practices’ networks. It can be centrally managed by IT staff when used in conjunction with NCP’s Secure Enterprise Management (SEM) system. That allows IT administrators to provide access to a wide variety of user devices with a single point of administration for a practice’s entire remote access network. Network administrators can easily control user and device provisioning and distribute updates and configuration settings.

The NCP Secure Enterprise Client bundles robust security features including a built-in device firewall, dialer and intuitive graphical interface. Its Path Finder technology, when used in conjunction with NCP’s hybrid IPsec/SSL  VPN gateway, solves connection issues created by firewall settings that prevent IPsec communications.

The VPN software also ensures seamless roaming to prevent network connection losses when switching between 3G/4G, Wi-Fi and LAN access. Its Friendly Net Detection further improves security by determining whether users are connecting on a known versus unknown network.

All network communication is encrypted via advanced methods such as AES (128, 192, 256 bit), 3DES and Blowfish (128, 448 bits) to ensure complete security. The client can manage connectivity to a network through wireless or wired connections, on major operating systems, including Windows 8/7/Vista/XP (32/64-bit), Mac OS X, Linux and Android and it has universal compatibility with third-party VPN gateways.

Ease of Use, Configuration and Deployment

The software is very easy to use and it lets users establish a connection with one click. The NCP Secure Enterprise Client takes minutes to install, requires no technical expertise, and can be automatically configured and updated by NCP’s SEM software.

For practices that would like to centrally manage their remote access, the SEM system is ideal for environments with more than 50 VPN clients. Deployment typically takes two to four days.

Advantages

  • Provides secure remote access to a corporate network
  • Complies with HIPAA Security Rule, especially the data-in-motion mandate
  • Rapid deployment
  • User and IT administrator-friendly
  • Available for major operating systems

Recap

NCP engineering’s enterprise IPsec VPN client is the perfect option for organizations that need to meet HIPAA data security requirements, desire advanced network security and staff flexibility, and would like to centrally manage all remote connections.
