The Benefits of e-Prescribing on the iPhone

Next time you reach for your prescription pad, you may want to grab your iPhone instead.

iPrescribe, the new e-prescribing tool for the iPhone, is available. This application gives doctors the ability to transmit and receive prescriptions from their iPhone. No more phone calls or faxes are necessary -- the only thing a doctor needs is an active Wi-Fi or cellular data connection.

With iPrescribe, doctors can write out prescriptions with three little touches. With a single touch, a doctor can review an electronic refill request from the pharmacy and either grant it or deny it.

Along with 3,500 FDA-approved prescription medications, iPrescribe also includes access to the Surescripts network, which gives physicians the ability to send prescriptions to 86% of all national pharmacies. To make future prescribing even faster, after writing a prescription it can be saved to a favorites list the specific way it was prescribed.

Doctors can manually enter patient information via the iPhone or they can use the iPrescribe website and enter the data from a laptop or personal computer. They can then synchronize the data with their iPhone. The app uses encryption to keep patient data safe and users must enter a six digit code every time they launch the application (the code is emailed to the user when the app is installed).

While the application can make life much simpler for doctors, it is still not possible to prescribe schedule II drugs electronically. The application is only available to qualified, medical professionals with active and valid DEA, NPI and state license numbers. It is available for a monthly subscription fee and it supports the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad and iPod Touch.
