Tech Tip: VisualDx Can Aid in Diagnosis and Treatment

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, which is why VisualDx has compiled more than 25,000 peer-reviewed medical images in its point-of-care clinical decision support tool.

VisualDx is a web-based so it does not require you to install any software and it is available for desktop, laptop and smartphones.

The images contained in VisualDx’s database represent more than 1,200 different conditions that occur in both children and adults. VisualDx supports a variety of medical professions including internal medicine, emergency, family, pediatrics, dermatology and dentistry.

Doctors can use VisualDx to confirm a diagnosis, look up medication for a condition or review therapy recommendations for the diagnosis. If the doctor is unsure of what condition the patient is presenting they can use VisualDx’s database to narrow down the possible conditions. There are several ways to search the VisualDx database; searches can be conducted by entering visual clues, symptoms, or patient history.

Once the search results are returned, doctors can then compare the photos to what their patient is presenting. The results also include treatment information. In instances where the doctor would like to confirm a diagnosis, they can search VisualDx’s database by diagnosis. After entering their diagnosis into VisualDx’s search engine, the program will then return a list of examples of that diagnosis. Each example includes a short clinical description and images.

For patient’s presenting symptoms that can be found in two or more conditions, doctors can us VisualDx’s differential builder. The differential builder lets doctors select a clinical scenario and then enter their patient’s specific symptoms. VisualDx will then create a contextualized, patient-relevant differential diagnosis.

In addition to searching by symptoms or conditions, VisualDx offers a medication search feature so doctors can find a list of adverse reactions for medications. VisualDx is customizable. It lets users adjust how they search the database and includes options like type-ahead-find, diagnosis synonymy, key words, and text search.

The desktop version of VisualDx supports Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Internet Explorer 8+. It does require users to enable session cookies and JavaScript.

The mobile app supports Android phone or tablet. It is available from the Apple Store and Google Play. All devices require 3G/4G or wireless connection.
