An App to Keep Track of Eponyms

The medical profession is rife with Eponyms, those diseases, treatments or tests named after their discoverer/developer. There are so many that it is impossible to remember all of them.

Eponym, the aptly named app, available for both iPad and Android, was developed to help medical professionals find an Eponym quickly and efficiently. This is a single use app. It helps users find the Eponym and nothing else.

It is designed with a clean and simple interface and has more than 1,700 eponyms.

The app's main page has three super-menus (all categories, favorites, and recent). There is also a category for every subdivision of medicine. It includes sections for lab tests, procedures and physical exam findings.

After opening a submenu, a search bar will open to a list of eponyms. You can type in the eponym you are looking for or scroll through the list. You can also add a eponym to your favorites database by clicking the star next to it.

After clicking on an eponyms, users are shown a brief description along with links to additional references. The description of the eponym is succinct, typically provides a description of the disease, but doesnt give additioanl information about epidemiology, pathogenesis, or treatment.

Since the descriptions can be a bit light on information, you can use the additional reference links to navigate outside of the app to Wikipedia or to conduct a Google search. However, keep in mind those sources often lack citation, so they may not be as reliable.

The app is available from the Google Play store and the App store.
