Selecting an electronic medical record system is a complicated process. With so many different proprietary software choices available, it can be hard for a doctor to decide which package will work best for them. Further complicating the decision is the fact that the price of the software often doesn’t include the hardware upgrades and technical support necessary to bring the software online. Since the software itself represents a significant investment, it is no wonder that many physicians are reluctant to make the switch to electronic medical records.

Physicians frequently turn to clinical decision support software to help diagnose and treat patients. Not only does the software facilitate an accurate diagnosis, but also many doctors feel it contributes to reduced healthcare costs. By providing an accurate diagnosis the first time, return visits are eliminated, along with referrals and unnecessary tests.

Dictation is a necessary but time-consuming job. While dictation software has made the task a whole lot easier, most still require that the physician be in front of a computer for the duration of the dictation. Of course, this is a big step up from the days when physicians had to send tapes off to a transcription service.
