Until now, the private licensing boards generally only require a physician to re-certify every 10 years. However, many of the boards have recently required the doctors to enroll in a Maintenance of Certification program.

The program requires physicians to earn continuing education credits each year in order to remain certified. Many doctors are complaining these programs are time and cost prohibitive.
