Additional Certification Requirements Vexing Doctors

In addition to having a license from their state licensing board, 75% of all physicians hold additional licensing with one of 24 private licensing boards, usually within their specialty. So reports The Wall Street Journal.

Until now, the private licensing boards generally only require a physician to re-certify every 10 years. However, many of the boards have recently required the doctors to enroll in a Maintenance of Certification program.

The program requires physicians to earn continuing education credits each year in order to remain certified. Many doctors are complaining these programs are time and cost prohibitive.
