What to do When a 2nd Opinion Isn’t Available

When doctors have questions about patient care, they know that the best source of information is other doctors. However, sometimes it is not possible to consult with a colleague.

That’s when doctors can turn to a clinical-decision making program like UpToDate.  An easy-to-use clinical decision-making program, UpToDate makes finding the answer to medical questions simple. The interface is easy to navigate and has a panel of experts who can answer any medical question. The answers also include all the necessary background information needed to understand how the experts arrived at their recommendation.

Doctors can get answers in the office, exam room or at the bedside because UpToDate is available via the Web and mobile devices. UpToDate offers specific, detailed answers for clinical questions. The database contains more than 8,500 topics in 17 medical specialties and includes more than 97,000 pages of text. It also has graphics, links to Medline abstracts, more than 385,000 references and a drug database.

UpToDate employs a host of physician editors and authors to review and continuously update the content. An updated version is released every four months.

To make decision-making on the go even easier, UpToDate is available for iPhone, iPad and Android (with an individual subscription). With UpToDate-on-the-go, doctors can download UpToDate's full content to their mobile device. This gives doctors the ability to search the complete database of evidence-based recommendations offline. This service is available as an add-on to the individual subscription.
