The Detroit Health Department reports that currently the city has at maximum 100 primary care doctors available to serve a population of 683,000. That means that there is one primary care doctor for every 6,000 residents. This forces many patients to seek doctors in outlying suburbs, but for some, it is impossible to travel that distance, leaving them without access to care.
